Day 061: Visitor / Studio Sumusta

Sundays wouldn’t be Sundays without these lovely and talented professional guests that we have an honour to welcome here. Today our guest is a team of two energetic professionals. Together they work with name Studio Sumusta. Piia and Liisa have a multidisciplinary approach to creativity. They work with furniture and spatial design as well as with music and arts. Piia has a musical talent too and during her free time she plays guitar in a band. Liisa is a visual artist from her second profession. Today they are here to tell us about their work, sources of inspiration and on top of all they have created and inspiring activity. This week has been so special, we have had so many great and inspiring creative talents visiting us! We are super happy to welcome Studio Sumusta as our professional Sunday guest!

The original text about Studio Sumusta was written in Finnish. This is a free translation of the original text.

The story of Studio Sumusta dates back to 2015, when we started our furniture and spatial design Studies at Aalto University. We soon noticed some similarities in our approaches to life and work even if we have very different backgrounds. We noticed that we both are eager to face new challenges without fear or doubts. We started to work together with some small projects like jewellery collections. Soon we noticed that we would need a name for our collaborations. Sumusta is a Finnish word and refers to mist. We liked the word due to its abstractness. Somehow it brings in mind those blurry landscapes were you can’t really define any independent things, the contrast just disappears and everything becomes a unity. Atmospheres and experiences are the biggest and most important source of inspiration and motivation for us.

These days we are working both together and on some individual projects. Liisa is concentrating on spatial design, art ceramics and painting. Piia is concentrating on spatial and set design, ceramics and furniture design. We are aiming to work with multidisciplinary projects also in the future and hope that we can be guiding the way of new Finnish design and younger designers as well.

We at Bobola asked three key questions from Piia and Liisa:

Piia:

I am inspired by my childhood. The lifestyle of my grandparents living very close to nature is an important memory that still inspires me. I also get inspired by arts and architecture.”

In the future I have decided to hold on things that are very crucial and important for me. Even if the daily salary comes from something else I want to keep on the artistic side of me active too and yes, of course music!”

Most important things for me are friends and family. Life without all these amazing people around me would be so dull, dark and boring.”

Liisa:

I am inspired by things being on the edge, things being very customary but still unknown or unfamiliar. Colours are just and endless source of inspirations for me, I could keep on speaking about colours for hours and hours.”

In the future I’ll learn to trust my intuition.”

Most important thing for me is to be able to do things I find inspiring and meaningful together with people I love.”

“We can get inspired by so many exciting things, culture, art, history…”

Activity of the day: Art made with the treasures of nature

1. You should head outside in the near by forest or park. Take a basket or a bag with you so that you can collect some inspiring materials for your art pieces. You can collect stones, plants, leaves, hay etc. Remember to pack lunch with you!

2. While roaming around in the nature, you should collect inspiring materials. Remember to respect the rules and nature! In Finland we have this thing called “Joka miehen oikeus / Everyman’s rights” You can check the link here for further information. https://www.nationalparks.fi/everymansright . Please remember to take in consideration the local and country rules, specific to your area.

3. Find a place where you are going to make your art piece. Check the pictures for further inspiration!

4. Create your piece of art using the materials you have earlier found from your walk. Take some pictures and leave it there to delight some other people and animals. The great thing about this activity is that all the material will naturally return back to the cycle of nature!

Have a great day!
