Diversity in Space

We, Kathrin and Sarah define ourselves as space explorers, trying to scan the built environment which frames our everyday life and its social qualities behind. We met each other at State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart Germany during our first semesters in an experimental material laboratory. Although we belong to different faculties, Kathrin to Product Design and Sarah to Architecture, we realized our common fascination for material research, experiments and developments as well as the quality of interdisciplinary work. Starting observing material phenomena in our everyday life, we intensified our research in a collaborating project.

First of all, we asked ourselves how material embodies itselfs and how material properties are influencing us on different scales. From Kathrin’s perspective as a Designer maybe more on a scale of furniture and products and from Sarah’s perspective on a scale of buildings and the whole city. Imagining an utopian situation of a ‘Generic City’ - a city in which everything is defined as the same boring element. Is there a chance to observe behaviours of textures and material in an obvious and subtle way?

Does a material have a certain structure? And how do the specific material properties feel? Does it look different in a special light? Sunlight/Moonlight?

In a world of currently incoming information, effects and impressions, we can’t experience our environment maybe as we would like to.

But you are lucky! We will show you a way off!

We confront materialistic constellations more often than we think. In most of the time we don’t really recognize how they are influencing us. Think of a crosswalk over the street: the graphic intervention on the street guide pedestrians safely over it. We have internalized this kind of ‘behaviour’ totally in following the lines.

Activity:

While analyzing soft and hard materials in the last days, today, we will  look more into the confrontation of diverse materials in our build environment.

In those times, maybe you have the time to explore your neighborhood or even your whole city in a totally different way! And all you need for this material exploration day is some paper and colorful pencils.

Step outside and try to extend your view for material diversity in your environment! You will recognize quite quickly how many fascinating things you will find. If you have found something, take a piece of paper on top of your material and draw over it. With this drawing you will create your own abstraction of the world. This is a tool of exploring and understanding material properties surrounding you.

In accumulating several drawings, in the end, you will have your own and personal collection of materials. Bringing them next to each other, you will see how various and exciting our everyday life is!

Have fun exploring the normal! It’s more thrilling than you think!

PS: Don’t forget the paper! Maybe people aren’t so amused if you are coloring their house walls ;)
